“We think we know someone but the truth is that we only know the version of them “they” have chosen to show us.”
Why is Taylor Swift great? It’s simply because she’s a genius for her oh-my-god-we’re-the-same-person lyrics. Like most people on the internet, I looked forward to Taylor Swift’s Reputation album after her hibernation. It was released last November but it was only last month when I found myself going back to the same album, scouring the lyrics for resemblance to my very own history (that turbulent April). And sure enough, most of the things in this album resonated, and deeply so.
Never surrendering to a disgraced status. Embittered and vindictive toward a public that abandoned her. Betrayed by those in her personal orbit and yet revels in a state of sin. Oh and maybe at one point, a little heartbroken? I’d have to say they’re all a tad relatable. Some amazing lyrics from this album that spoke to me the most are the following:
Item #1 That Dude (Ready for It)
Stealing hearts and running off and never sayin’ sorry.
Item #2 The Public and their Opinion (I Did Something Bad)
They ‘re burning all the witches even if you aren’t one
They got their pitchforks and proof, their receipts and reasons
They’re burning all the witches even if you aren’t one
So light me up, light me up
Item #3 The Perpetrator (LWYMMD)
The world moves on, another day, another drama, drama
But not for me, not for me, all I think about is karma
And then the world moves on but one thing’s for sure
Maybe I got mine but you’ll all get yours
Item #4: The Fake Friends
And therein lies the issue / Friends don’t try to trick you / Get you on phone and mind-twist you,
Item #5 The Stickers aka real friends (This is Why We Can’t Have Nice Things)
Here’s a toast to my real friends
They don’t care about the he-said she-said
And because Tay Tay always gets the last word, here’s mine too: (End Game/ I Did Something Bad)
Reputation precedes me, in rumors, I’m knee-deep
The truth is, it’s easier to ignore it,believe me
They say I did something bad, but why does it feel so good?
If a man talks s__t, then I owe him nothing
I don’t regret it one bit, ‘cause he had it coming
